Executive Summary
Legal practice is one of the last knowledge industries where the limit on AI deployment is not the model. It is the infrastructure that sits between the model and the systems a matter actually touches.
A real matter spans legal research platforms, document management, contract lifecycle, e-discovery, time and billing, conflicts, knowledge management, and the firm’s own precedent and brief banks. Each of those is a separate vendor integration, a separate confidentiality perimeter, and a separate audit boundary. An AI agent that needs to reason across them at the pace a partner or general counsel actually moves runs into three structural problems that current AI platforms do not solve. The schemas for that many vendor tools exhaust the model’s context window before the agent begins reasoning. The privilege, work product, ethical wall, and cross-border data rules a sophisticated practice operates under are not enforceable in any consistent way at the AI call surface. And the institutional pattern recognition that actually drives a senior partner’s decisions does not live in any system an agent can call.
V-Stela is the infrastructure layer built for this problem. It is a federated gateway that lets a single AI session reach an arbitrary number of vendor tools across cloud and on-premises boundaries through one semantic-indexed surface, with regulatory and ethics policy enforced on every call and a defensible audit trail. Above the gateway sits a sovereign agentic runtime designed to run inside the firm’s or the client’s perimeter, calling research and matter telemetry through the federation while keeping the model, the policy, the matter data, and the audit inside that perimeter. The combination opens a category of in-perimeter agentic systems that does not exist today as a productized offering anywhere in legal: agents that encode the institutional knowledge of senior practitioners as enforceable policy, run locally without cloud round-trip, and remain auditable and portable across matters under firm or client sovereignty rules.
V-Stela is provider-agnostic. The gateway, the policy engine, and the audit trail do not depend on any single model vendor’s safety surface to function. The firm or the client chooses the model, frontier or open-weights, and owns the policy and the evidence base. V-Stela already federates a productized legal document stack covering generation, theming and rendering, Git-style revision tracking, multi-agent review, semantic search and AST navigation, and tracked changes with embedded fingerprint verification, across forty productized legal document types in seven categories. The legal infrastructure is shipped and running.
